Early Spring in the Show Garden
As spring arrives activity in the garden begins to increase. For an early August Show this is when careful timing becomes critical, sowing too early or too late can mean missing peak condition.
Here’s what to focus on in the first weeks of spring:
Sow Under Cover
Early spring is ideal for sowing many Show vegetables and flowers indoors or in a greenhouse.
Sow under cover:
- Tomatoes (main sowing)
- Cucumbers
- Courgettes (later spring for August size)
- Brassicas (summer cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli)
- Asters
- Sweet peas (if not autumn sown)
Aim for steady growth rather than rushing plants on.
Prepare for Outdoor Sowing
Start preparing beds while soil conditions allow:
- Remove weeds early
- Improve soil with compost or well-rotted manure
- Check drainage, vital in Manx conditions
Avoid working soil when it’s too wet, as this can cause long term problems.
Start Dahlias and Gladioli
- Dahlias: pot up tubers under cover in early spring
- Gladioli: plan succession planting from mid spring onwards to time blooms for August
Pinching and staking plans should be thought through early.
Pot On Gradually
Seedlings and young plants should be:
- Potted on in stages
- Kept growing steadily, not stressed
- Hardened off slowly before going outside
Sudden changes in temperature or pot size can set plants back.
Keep August in Mind
For an early August Show:
- Avoid sowing root vegetables too early, overgrown produce loses points
- Plan succession sowing where possible
- Focus on quality, uniformity and condition
