The Final Stretch – Preparing Farm & Garden Entries for August
By late spring and early summer the groundwork has been done. Seeds are sown, plants are growing and the Royal Manx Agricultural Show is firmly on the horizon. This stage is all about management and timing. Knowing when to encourage growth and when to slow it down so exhibits peak at exactly the right time.
Here’s what to focus on during late spring and early summer:
Vegetables: Managing Growth and Timing
At this point many vegetables are growing quickly. The key is to avoid over feeding or allowing crops to mature too early.
Root Vegetables
Carrots, beetroot and parsnips
- Thin carefully to ensure even spacing
- Keep soil consistently moist to avoid splitting
- Avoid excess nitrogen it promotes leaf growth over root quality
Tip: For an August Show, roots should look fresh and tender not oversized.
Potatoes
- Earth up regularly to protect tubers from light
- Water consistently once flowering starts
- Stop heavy watering a couple of weeks before lifting for Show entries
Tip: Lift a trial plant to check size before harvesting the final exhibit.
Brassicas
Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli
- Protect against pests with netting
- Feed lightly but regularly
- Remove damaged outer leaves early
Tomatoes, Peppers & Cucumbers
- Train and tie plants early
- Remove side shoots from tomatoes regularly
- Feed weekly once flowers set
Tip: Aim for evenly coloured fruit with matching size uneven ripening will cost points.
Courgettes, Marrows & Squash
- Harvest little and often to control size
- Select potential show specimens early and protect them from damage
- Shade fruit from direct sun to avoid blemishes
Flowers: Control and Conditioning
Sweet Peas
- Pick regularly to encourage continuous flowering
- Tie in growth and remove tendrils if necessary
- Increase feeding as flowering begins
Gladioli
- Stake early to avoid wind damage
- Continue succession planting where possible
- Remove side shoots for stronger spikes
Dahlias
- Pinch and disbud according to class requirements
- Stake securely, summer winds can cause damage
- Feed weekly once buds appear
Chrysanthemums
- Continue disbudding and feeding
- Protect from wind and heavy rain
- Timing blooms for early August is critical
Roses & Pot Plants
Roses
- Deadhead regularly
- Feed little and often
- Protect blooms from rain close to Show time if possible
Pot Plants
- Keep evenly watered, never allow them to dry out
- Rotate pots for even growth
- Remove dead leaves and spent blooms promptly

Fruit & Soft Fruit
- Thin apples and pears to improve size and shape
- Net soft fruit against birds
- Watch for pests and disease, early action matters
Preparing for Show Week
As August approaches:
- Re-read class descriptions carefully
- Check required numbers and sizes
- Plan harvest dates, many exhibits are best cut or lifted 24–48 hours before judging
- Gather clean trays, boxes and labels

Late spring and early summer are about attention to detail. Small adjustments now including spacing, feeding and protection can make the difference between a good exhibit and a great one.
